Exercise 8 :Focal lengths and different view points

The object of this exercise was  find a scene with enough space in front to allow me to be able to move forward and choose different view points, one using a long lens  and a second image using a wide angle lens fitting the subject to the frame. Once completed the images were to be reviewed and aspects of the images compared .
Image one taken with an 18-200 zoom lens at its longest focal length of 200mm ensuring that the subject fills the frame

Although composed ok and  in the end is an image of a boat and tractor ,the image gives a feeling of depth  with the sea clearly visible in the distance  but offer little else artistically. everything look as you would expect to see it and in my opinion is a bit dull and soul less.

Image 2 taken qith a 10-20 wide angle lens at its shortest focal length of 10mm

This image  on the other hand  has a feeling of being right up close to the tractor ,flat and a little unreal in some respects  I was literal a couple of inches away to enable me to fill the frame There is no sense of depth yet the image is far more appealing.

This is a method i have never tried before and as a result I was a little shocked by the results of this exercise. Ignoring the artistic content of the images  and commenting purely on visual content .

I felt so intrigued by this method that although the image was little more than a snap shot for the purpose of the exercise i felt compelled to manipulate the image to see if i could make a decent image with artistic content from it ,and loved the end result i think it worked. As a result i will be doing more close up in your face type shots in the future. My first big learning  discovery on this course.

Excercise 7:Focal Lengths

My aim was to find a scene  that had a central area of interest but at the same time had quite an open view .Focusing on the same point throughout. I chose the building at the top of the steps as a focus point and then took a series of images with the camera tripod mounted with my zoom lens using its full focal range of 18-200mm

From the results i concluded that although the cameras position was identical for each image and the central area in each image mirrored that of the other images be it on a varied size,  the feeling of distance in image 1 @18mm quite surprising. At the other end of the scale the final image @ 200mm gives the feeling of being virtually within the subject.

My personal favourite was the image taken @ 170mm giving an impression that the building was sitting at the top of the steps and appears quite dominating within the frame.

Exercise6: Objects in different positions within the frame

In this exercise i  needed to find a subject with a plain background. I then needed to produce  a series of images placing the subject in different places within the frame. Due to the British weather i struggled to get out shooting so although the subject is not very artistic i feel it meets the desired criteria.

Once completed i was to place the images in order of personal preference.

positions within the frame (20 of 54)-Edit

Above is the original image captured without much thought about composition , a bit of a point and shoot image , and my least favourite of the group.Included within this image are the frames of the images below showing their positions within the original image.

objects in differnt positions wiothin the frame (2 of 6)

Image 2 above was taken central but slightly zoomed , quite boring

Image 3 above slightly to the left a little better but no real interesting content

objects in differnt positions wiothin the frame (4 of 6)

Image 4 above with the subject towards the right side of the frame

Image 5 above central but slightly to the top edge

objects in differnt positions wiothin the frame (3 of 6)

Image 6 above left and slightly to the top

And finally my favourite image 7 above slightly upon and to the right hand side of the frame enabling the slopes of the grass terraces to converge towards the step resulting in the eye being guided the the subject .With a better subject its positioning within the frame could enhance an image greatly.
